How often do you really need to tune up a Jeep Cherokee?
I have a 91′ Jeep Cherokee. It’s been over a year since I tuned it up. It’s been over 20K. It runs fine. I think it may be due for one regardless.
I’d just like to get your opinion regarding how often you need to tune them up and when do you know it needs it?

There’s only so much you can do to “tune-up” your Cherokee. A complete “tune-up’ would be new plugs, wires, cap and rotor and air filter. You can not set the timing, there are no points or condenser, no setting point gap or dwell (meaning no “tuning”) so it’s just a matter of replacing parts.
While you could go close to 100k on a full replacement a lot is going to depend on personal preference, budget and local weather driving conditions.
I change the plugs in my Jeep every six months, I use an air filter that I can clean and re-install, I run an aftermarket ignition system but I also spend a lot of time doing rock crawling and desert driving which means a lot of fine, powdery dirt, high temps and occasional high rpms so I do maintenance much more often.
At 20k miles check your air filter and either clean it if is a re-usable type or replace it if it’s dirty, check your cap, rotor and wires, keep them clean, check for corrosion on the ends, cracks or wear, replace them if needed, you should be doing regular oil and filter changes at 3-5k miles. As for the spark plugs you can pull them out and see how they are burning but you can easily get 40-60k out of a set of plugs (use good plugs, I personally don’t care for the platinum/premium plugs on a Jeep nor do I care for the extra cost, you won’t get that much out of them on a 4.0 or 2.5).
If you live in an area that is either very dry (desert) or wet a lot or there’s salt on the roads check a little closer for corrosion, cracking and wear ( I would replace parts more often in severe conditions)
And as for knowing when it needs it, if it tells you it needs it it’s already too late. Do regular maintenance and don’t wait for it break. You’re better off spending the time and money to prevent problems than to fix them later.
